Cowboy Action Shooting

“The Spirit of the Game”

Cowboy Action Shooting is a multifaceted shooting sport in which contestants compete dressed in clothing appropriate to the period with firearms typical of the old west; single action revolvers, lever action rifles (in pistol caliber), and double barreled side by side, pre-1899 pump or lever action shotguns. The shooting competition is staged in a unique characterized “old west” style. *** Cowboy Action Shooting is not a fast draw competition.***

The sport is an attempt to re-live and enjoy the time of the “old west”, whether it be real or fantasy. The shooting competitions utilizes reactive steel targets and live ammunition, lead only, no gas checks. Shooters negotiate scenarios based on real or imagined incidents from the history of the 19th century west, or movies about it.

Cowboy action shooting takes pride in the use of weapons available between the Civil War and 1899. The technology of the sport is limited to what can be found in original or reproduction firearms of the period.

Unlike many modern “high tech” shooting matches, the emphasis is on fun rather than all out “win at any cost”, competition. This is an opportunity to make friends, share an appreciation for the lore and legend of the most well known and unique period in American history; it’s equipment, dress and lifestyle.

Cowboy Action Shooting is an activity for the entire family. A significant number of the participants are women or shooters in the junior category, and they don’t take a backseat to anyone when it comes to skill with a shootin’ iron, knowledge of the “old west’ or the enjoyment of this outdoor sport.

SAFETY MUST be the primary concern of each and every member of a Cowboy Action Shooting Club. The results of unsafe conduct can be tragic and permanent. Nothing can be taken for granted where safety is concerned.

The Single Action Shooting Society

The Single Action Shooting Society or (SASS) is an international organization created to preserve and promote Cowboy Action Shooting, the fastest growing shooting sport in America. SASS has members in virtually every state in the United States and in more than 13 foreign countries. SASS promulgates uniform rules for the conduct of the sport, approved regional matches held by affiliated clubs, and stages END OF THE TRAIL, the World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting. SASS publishes The Cowboy Chronicle, the definitive publication of Cowboy Action Shooting.

“The Spirit of the Game”

The Spirit of the Game is a philosophy that places old time values and their preservation ahead of the pressure to modern day life and the everyday scramble to get ahead. A philosophy that seeks the pure joy of the “simpler” times when families sat around the fire together and passed down the tales of their ancestors; the pioneer spirit, the time when one could count on their Colt or Winchester, along with the help of their neighbors.

We also encourage you to join SASS to help keep the Cowboy Action Shooting organized and following the friendly spirit of competition and preservation of heritage that we intend. SASS encourages all Cowboy Action Shooters to belong to the NRA, the oldest, largest, and the most forceful organization working full time to protect firearm ownership rights.
